Tirana, 8 April 2014 – On the occasion of Roma International Day,representatives of the Albanian Coalition for Child Education (ACCE) joined civil society organizations at the Albanian Parliament, where Roma children filled the Parliament Hall to talk with politicians and the Speaker of the Parliament Mr. Ilir Meta.
“Children speak with politicians”- itwas a day where the Albanian Parliament opened its doors for Roma children that was special not only for the Parliament staff, but also for the 75 Roma children who visited the most important institution. The Speaker of the Parliament wellcomed the children and different MP’s from the whole political spectrum discussed with them. The event was also attended by the Minister of Education and Sport, Mrs. Lindita Nikolla, representatives of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Interior, the Commissioner for the Protection from Discrimination, etc.
Children sat at working tables with the MPs and spoke about themselves, their families, the environment where they live, schools they attend and activities they participate in with different organizations and foundations.
The Albanian Parliamentand other decision-making institutions of the country have to provide solution to important issues such as registration of Roma children in kindergartens and schools, establishing specific budgets for territories where many Roma children live, assigning special budgets at the local level to integrate Roma children, as well as providing scholarships for children with social and economic problems.
